Scientific Investigation Resulting in Manufacturer Process Improvement

Engagement Overview

During qualification activities supporting the startup of a GMP biotechnology manufacturing facility, air visualization studies identified an unexpected anomaly within a newly installed Biological Safety Cabinet (BSC).

The Biological Safety Cabinet had undergone factory airflow testing before delivery. The unexpected airflow anomaly observed under static (“at rest”) conditions during on-site qualification therefore warranted further investigation. A structured scientific investigation was initiated to evaluate the study methodology, equipment performance, and potential manufacturing factors, with conclusions guided by reproducible evidence.

Working collaboratively with the equipment manufacturer, independent technical specialists, and executive leadership, the investigation ultimately identified a previously unrecognized manufacturing issue at the vendor level. The findings resulted in improvements to the manufacturer's production process while reinforcing the importance of objective scientific investigation and evidence-based decision making.

The RIBS Method™

Recover

Restore confidence in the data.

  • Repeated smoke visualization studies to verify reproducibility.
  • Independently reviewed study design, protocols, equipment, and testing methodology.
  • Eliminated procedural and operator variables before drawing technical conclusions.
  • Documented observations through comprehensive video evidence and technical reporting.

Improve

Validate findings through scientific investigation.

  • Performed a detailed technical evaluation of airflow performance.
  • Presented findings to the equipment manufacturer for collaborative review.
  • Participated in technical discussions focused on understanding the unexpected results rather than assigning fault.
  • Maintained an objective, evidence-based approach throughout the investigation.

Build

Establish technical consensus.

  • Supported independent onsite evaluation by the manufacturer's technical specialist.
  • Participated in executive-level technical reviews with the manufacturer's leadership.
  • Successfully demonstrated that the observed airflow anomaly was reproducible using both the original and manufacturer-provided testing protocols.
  • Worked collaboratively with all parties to identify the underlying cause.

Scale

Improve quality beyond a single facility.

Following confirmation of the findings, the manufacturer conducted an internal investigation and identified a previously unrecognized issue within its manufacturing process. Corrective actions were implemented by the manufacturer, improving future Biological Safety Cabinet production beyond the original installation.

The Lasting Impact

This engagement demonstrated the value of disciplined scientific judgment and collaborative problem solving. Rather than relying on assumptions or defending preconceived conclusions, every decision was guided by objective evidence and validated through independent verification.

The investigation ultimately contributed to improvements in the manufacturer's production process while reinforcing a philosophy that defines The Malash Group™:

Technical leadership is not about proving someone wrong. It is about following the evidence, working collaboratively, and solving complex problems together.
